Best Things to Do in Marrakech

From Jemaa el-Fna at dusk to a morning in the Atlas, the Marrakech experiences we recommend most — and how to enjoy them.

Marrakech can feel overwhelming on the first day and addictive by the third. Here are the experiences we recommend to first-time visitors, grouped so you can plan your days around them.

In the medina

1. Jemaa el-Fna at sunset

The main square is quiet in the morning and electric at night. Arrive before sunset, watch the food stalls set up from a café terrace, then go down into the crowd. Keep small change for musicians and performers if you take photos.

2. The souks with a guide

The souks spread north of the square in a web of specialized alleys: dyers, metalworkers, leather, carpets, spices. A half-day with a licensed guide is the fastest way to understand the layout and meet real artisans.

3. Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs

Both are in the southern kasbah area and showcase the finest Moroccan craftsmanship — carved cedar, stucco and zellige. Go early to avoid tour groups.

4. Ben Youssef Madrasa

A former Quranic school built around a marble courtyard. The symmetry and detail are extraordinary.

Beyond the walls

5. Jardin Majorelle and the YSL Museum

The cobalt-blue garden is one of the most visited places in Morocco. Book timed tickets in advance and visit at opening time.

6. A hammam

Choose between a local neighborhood hammam (an authentic, no-frills experience) or a spa hammam with a private ritual.

7. A cooking class

Most classes start with a market visit, then cover salads, a tagine and bread. You leave with recipes — and lunch.

Easy escapes

8. Sunset in the Agafay Desert

Under an hour away: camel or quad rides and dinner with views of the Atlas. Read our Agafay vs Sahara comparison.

9. A day in the Atlas Mountains

Walk between Berber villages around Imlil or follow the Ourika Valley to its waterfalls.

10. A hot air balloon at sunrise

An early start, but floating over the plains as the sun lights the Atlas is unforgettable.
